This is the story of Kartik Chandra Sur, an artisan from the Gopalpur cluster, Odisha. Weaving is a traditional occupation in Gopalpur. Kartik too comes from a family of weavers, and learnt weaving as naturally as he learnt to speak. Unfortunately, he and his family worked as labourers and earned a meagre daily wage. Antaran, an initiative of Tata Trusts, became a turning point in Kartik’s life, reshaping him as a professional artisan. Antaran supported him in his journey from creating designs for local audiences to innovating intricate designs that capture the attention of a broad market base, honing his skills in cost estimation and marketing. Kartik is not only flourishing as an artisan, but is also an advocate for handlooms - educating others about weaving and sharing with buyers the struggles of fellow artisans. Kartik is one of the many artisans, passionate and skilled in their craft, whose lives have been touched by Antaran. Their stories of change and growth are testaments of the transformative impact of Antaran.
