Pradosham - How to observe Pradosham
Pradosham is a sacred observance dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, the supreme deity of Hinduism. Pradosham means "the removal of sins," and it occurs on the 13th lunar day (trayodashi) of every fortnight, both during the waxing and waning phases of the moon. Pradosham is considered a very auspicious time to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati, who are believed to be happy and generous during this time.
Significance of Pradosham
Pradosham is derived from the Sanskrit word "pradosha," which means "the dusk or twilight period." It is believed that during this time, Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction, known as "tandava nritya." This dance symbolizes the cycle of life and death, as well as the power and grace of Lord Shiva.
Pradosham is also associated with the legend of Lord Shiva drinking the deadly poison "halahala" that emerged from the churning of the milky ocean by the gods and demons. Lord Shiva saved the universe from destruction by swallowing the poison, but he kept it in his throat, which turned blue. Hence, he is also known as "Neelakantha," meaning "the one with a blue throat." The gods and demons were grateful to Lord Shiva for his sacrifice and worshipped him during the pradosha time.
