The Supreme Court has strongly criticized corruption in public life, declaring it a greater menace than hired killers. In its remarks, the court emphasized that corruption, especially among high-ranking government officials and political parties, hampers societal progress and fosters economic unrest. The court made these observations while rejecting anticipatory bail for Devinder Kumar Bansal, a Punjab government audit inspector accused of demanding bribes for auditing village panchayat development works. The court stressed that pre-arrest bail in corruption cases should only be granted in exceptional circumstances and highlighted that maintaining public trust in governance outweighs individual liberty in such matters. Bansal’s case was deemed not to meet the criteria for bail, reinforcing the stance against corruption.
