Now, more than two decades later, Adventures With Purpose teams up with Sunshine State Sonar, led by a determined team of volunteer divers, has picked up the trail. Their goal: to uncover the truth beneath the murky waters near Yakelin's apartment complex and along her presumed route.
Scouring an area known as Blue Lagoon, a location eerily close to Yakelin's home, the team readies their boats, the waters loom dark and deep. It’s clear that this search will be anything but simple. Sonar pings echo in the depths, returning images of what could be submerged vehicles, some almost accessible only by impossibly tight pathways or sheer cliffs—a challenging, almost taunting clue that something went terribly wrong on that fateful night.
With sonar readings that point to 11 potential vehicles, the team carefully marks each one, their hopes rising with each scan that shows a car upside down, a haunting shadow against the lakebed. As they zero in on these vehicles, they sift through scenarios, recalling each chilling possibility that might explain her disappearance. An accident on a rainy night? An unintentional plunge into the waters near her home? Or could it have been something more sinister?
Just when the search appears to be hitting a standstill, the sonar shows a vehicle with a shape disturbingly similar to Yakelin’s Malibu. The vehicle rests near an overpass, lodged in a remote part of the waterway. It’s a long shot, but the eerie placement—hidden behind walls and vegetation, near a bridge that was likely under construction at the time—suggests an accident or something perhaps even darker. The team decides that they must dive on this car. As the divers prepare, the gravity of their mission weighs heavily on them; they know that, for Yakelin's family, this may be the only chance to find closure.
Over the next few hours, the divers work tirelessly, bringing in buoys, checking maps, and marking GPS coordinates. As the day winds down, they cross-reference every possible detail, drawing on each other’s expertise and sheer determination to bring this mystery closer to a solution.
After a grueling search, the divers emerge with bittersweet news. The vehicles they identified aren't Yakelin's, but the team isn’t giving up. They know that every car they mark, every inch of water they cover, and every possibility they consider brings them closer to an answer. In the meantime, Sunshine State Sonar keeps diving, driven by the heartbreaking stories they carry and the resolve to find Yakelin, somewhere, waiting to be found.
