How to Create and Use a Modified SWOT Analysis

Build your AI transformation Strategy in 30 Days 🚀 ➝ onstrategyhq.com/ai-contact-2/

What is a modified SWOT analysis? SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. SWOTs are a thinking tool to help establish the current state of your organization and environment before you start planning.

Instead of four quadrants in the standard SWOT, we utilize three in our modified analysis and ask ourselves the following questions, “what is working well, what is in our way, and what are our biggest growth/improvement opportunities?” A modified SWOT analysis works best when you have a strategic goal.

Compared to a standard SWOT, the modified counterpart tends to be less precise. For example, it does not include threats, so it prohibits the process of analyzing internal and external problems.

The purpose of a modified SWOT is to engage and utilize the wisdom of your organization in a non-threatening way. When you are refreshing your strategic plan, it provides a useful way to develop new ideas and steer your focus.

How to use a modified SWOT analysis:

1. Create themes - going through all three quadrants to find common themes
2. Set objectives - themes become your objectives
3. Turn into initiatives - set the ideas and objectives into actionable initiatives
