🍌 (1/2) Potassium binders are indicated for hyperkalemia associated with chronic kidney disease. Theres questionable utility in the acute setting, but we’re limited on elimination options. 90% of potassium is renally cleared, and 10% is eliminated via feces.
We’ve got three commercial products. Kayexylate has an onset of 2 hours and has the most electrolyte abnormalities, causing hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia, and hypernatremia. Valtessa is the slowest of the three with an onset of 4 hours, but you’d only have to worry about hypomagnesemia.
