Making a Bone Nut From a Blank | Fixing Open String Fret Buzz

This guitar had open string fret buzz as a result of the slots being too low. This had clearly been an issue previously based on the attempted shimming.

Nut slot depth is crucial for a guitar's playability, tone, and tuning stability.

The depth of the nut slots determines the string height (action) near the first fret. If the slots are too shallow, the strings will sit too high, making it harder to press them down, especially for chords or notes near the nut. Conversely, if the slots are too deep, the strings can buzz against the frets, causing unwanted noise.

Proper slot depth ensures accurate string contact at the nut, which is essential for precise intonation. If the slots are too deep or improperly angled, the strings may not vibrate correctly, leading to tuning inconsistencies.

Correctly cut slots allow strings to glide smoothly when tuning or bending. Shallow slots or improper angles can cause strings to stick, leading to tuning issues.

The nut acts as a critical contact point for open strings. Proper depth and angle ensure clean vibrations and resonance, contributing to the overall tone quality of the guitar.

Proper nut slot depth is a balance: deep enough for comfortable playability and clean tone, but not so deep that it causes buzzing or instability.
