Mayilalayam – Musings of Marvel & Magic from the Hills.
“Mayilalayam” is holiday retreat near courtrallam enroute Ariyankavu abutting the western ghats. It is a fusion architecture of neo classical style blending with chettinad aesthetics, yet very modern to keep update functions of today’s high technology , a design influenced by the region's cultural heritage, using local materials, techniques, and forms passed down through generations. The principal architect worked with a traditional Madurai family that has deep roots to culture, passion for building and philanthropy. The owner of the building Ram visualized his grandfather’s architecture and wanted to build something similar, tweaking the old into the new- inspired by the backdrop (western ghats) & the front view (large water body) with several streams and water falls within the property. Built on a 44 acre resplendent mangosteen estate, a large part of the property is left wild for nature to take up its course. Architect and the house owner was conscious on keeping the environment intact and use several technologies to keep the house warm in winters and cool in summers through clima-control plastering, sandwiching panels with light weight pads and use wood, steel & decks with minimum cement or concrete mortar. The egg white putty, charcoal blocks, filter mesh for plasters keep the building resonate with old world charm. Clay tile throughout the property with slopes that correspond to 18th century Kerala tharavad, the house comes to life with a full circle of sustainability. The design and landscape of the house very much blends with the backdrop, in a sense to resonate with nature. The large lobby entrance is entirely supported on brackets and is a master piece adopted from the chola temple in Tanjore to bear force from gravity. The stone pillars in fact hold the entire building in tact like the chola architecture. The long 100 feet verandas across the house on all 4 sides is on decked cantilever that helps breathe fresh air from the mountains. Cross ventilated across 4 directions and also through a slit in the roof, the clay tiled high roof building emits sunlight through the day from its large glass flat roof in the middle, another of its complex combination of glass and clay in the magic mingling. The Pooja in the south west derives light from the south east, energising the sanctum and brings perfect harmony. The double height dhyana mandap is a master piece that again rests on the cantilever and is projected outwards from the ISB and clay tile. The atrium to the veranda connect on the first floor is through a floating bridge that hangs on the deck and acts a support to the main frame. The surprise element to the house is the green corridor and water fountain with a small sacred space that is in-between the main entrance lobby and the atrium. The harmony of the vastu chakras are well invoked from the principles of varying heights starting from the entrance in the north east to the sacred space in the south west in a phased inclination of 9 degrees. Another architectural feet of the house is derived from the Travancore palace where the alighting point at the porch sees the peacock marble engraving of the house at the stairs – a mirroring reflection of the angle of inclination. The house is 100% Vaastu perfect with styling of several ancient chakras invoking itself for inner harmony and peace. The plumbing of the house is done in the most sustainable and bio degradable way to protect nature at its best. A zero discharge concept with an additional filter to assure ground zero discharge. The rain water harvesting is completely synchronized with the channels and is connected with the main water source for optimal use and zero waste.
The interiors have been well crafted to match the neo classical, colonial chettinad blend with carefully thought out furnishing that reflect calmness and serenity to the eyes. The property does justice to the owner, who hails from the illustrious karumuttu family and is fond of building, architecture and art. Ram is the grandson of Thiagarajar chettiar and the son of Lakshmi Murugesan, daughter of kalaithanthai. They run famous textile mills in Madurai and its sorroundings by the name of Paramount Textile Mills P Ltd & Shree Sarvaloka.
