Sky City, also known as Sky City One, was an ambitious project in Changsha, China, aiming to construct an 838-meter-tall skyscraper in an unprecedented 90 days, including prefabrication. Proposed by Broad Sustainable Building, the estimated cost for the project was RMB 9 billion ($1.46 billion). The design featured an innovative layout with 202 stories, including facilities such as a hotel, hospital, schools, offices, and residential spaces for up to 17,000 people. The construction plan included 104 high-speed elevators, earthquake resistance with 270,000 tons of steel, and sustainable building technology.
Despite its ambitious vision, Sky City faced considerable scepticism and criticism. Doubts were raised about Broad Group's capacity to complete the project within the proposed timeframe, with concerns about wind resistance, potential sway, and emergency response capabilities. Environmental protests over the Daze Lake wetland led to the project's suspension in June 2016, expanding the no-construction zone. Despite claims of resuming construction, scepticisms persisted, and as of 2017, new renderings suggested a potential relocation near the waterfront. The challenges highlighted the complexities of executing such an innovative and colossal construction project.
