After my grand piano got tuned one day, I played it. After I played a lot of music, my mom's friend asked me to play Tarkus. I played only the first slow section (Stones of Years) on the piano. I thought of Joe Jackson's solo piano version of Home Town from 25th Anniversary, and other piano solo versions of other music. I enjoyed what I played, and a week later, I wanted to record myself playing Tarkus on piano.
It was after a jam session with two musicians I play with, and I played Tarkus on the piano. I think it was the next day I wanted to record it without people talking in the background (like in the jam session).
I played it a couple times, and I was okay with it. I liked the last time better, but it's more creative the first time when it really happens. It's hard to bring those ideas exactly like the first time, and every day I think of more new ideas. However, during the last time, I quoted a synth quote from a live show in 1977 (a Spanish-like quote), and another quote from Welcome Back my Friends. I like playing for my mom, but I feel more energetic when I play for a lot of people (when it's quiet) in a live room. I played part of the Manticore section (not all of it), and wanted to play Battlefield, which I didn't play on my organ version. I didn't want to play the entire piece, but I wanted to make my own piano arrangement.
This was also the same day I recorded my piano version of Love at First Sight, an excerpt from Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman

Yes, this is the complete Tarkus performed on the piano by Rachel Flowers. i apologize for the loss of video in the midst of the recording. I had a problem with the camcorder (well, I messed up, actually) but the audio was still going and I wasn't about to stop Rachel at that point - she was in the zone! But I was able to resume video at the end so you get to see her great finale.
This was so much fun to watch her play - I hope you agree!
Following the recent burglary of our house in which several musical instruments and other precious items were stolen, we really wanted to get some new video posted. We all feel that it is important to get on with our musical lives, because this is something that NO ONE can take away from us. We are not defeated - rather we are stronger from the experience. Heck, just listen to Rachel play this and you tell me what YOU think :)
