This Kodachrome home movie from 1955 shows a Brooklyn Dodgers game at their home field, Ebbets Field as well as the original Yankee Stadium, plus some footage of Little Leaguers and a football game. For viewers it is an up close and personal slice of a sepia toned past. Ebbets field was a Major League Baseball Stadium in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. It housed the famed Brooklyn Dodgers team and star players such as Sandy Koufax, Gil Hodges and Jackie Robinson. The stadium was erected in March of 1912 and remained standing until the 1960’s when it was turned into an apartment complex. The original Yankee Stadium was located in the Bronx in New York City. It was the home of the New York Yankees from 1923 to 2008, except for 1974–1975 when it was renovated. It hosted 6,581 Yankees regular season home games during its 85-year history. It was also the home of the New York Giants National Football League (NFL) team from October 21, 1956 through September 23, 1973. The stadium's nickname is "The House That Ruth Built" which is derived from Babe Ruth, the baseball superstar whose prime years coincided with the stadium's opening and the beginning of the Yankees' winning history.

The film opens with point of view shots from fans in the stands at Ebbets Field (:11). The Ebbets Field Scoreboard is pictured with an advertisement for Schaefer Beer across the top. The scoreboard featured an “h” that would light up when a player hit a ball and an “e” which would light up as players made errors. Players run bases (:14). The game might be a game between the Dodgers and Cincinnati Redlegs in July or the Philadelphia Phillies played in September. The wind and a pitch (:20) and a nice slide to third base (:34) are pictured. Players meet on the pitcher’s mound (1:47). The film snaps to close ground view footage from behind the umpire at a Little League game in an unidentified location (2:02). Little League gamers cheer after the win (2:44). A player gets a hit from the pitcher's toss (4:44). Another game plays on a different day (6:55). The tour travels to Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees (8:36) from a high stadium seat. Stunning shots capture the city skyline behind (8:39). The flag is raised as likely the Star-Spangled Banner is sung (8:55). Another shot peers over the pitcher’s mound (9:10). Another game features youth in street clothes; potentially a neighborhood game (13:03). Ground views flick back to Yankee Stadium (14:52) prior to another game start. Evening footage follows from seats lower to the turf (16:48). Kids are pictured in the stands of another little league game (18:30). Players run bases (19:41). Young female cheerleaders cheer the team on (19:56). The marching band stomps through (27:07) for a high school football game. Golf gets a feature in this vintage short (24:20). Players tee-off (24:23). Fuzzy images turn to another football game in fall (25:52). Close shots pass over the faces of team members in orange and black with a swing set behind (27:54). Beautiful colors are captured close to the catcher, umpire and player up to bat (28:35). Colors fade to black and white (29:25) for a Little League game. The final segment features another high school football game (31:15).

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
