How & Why we celebrate Makar Sankranti?

Makar Sankranti are known by various names in different states
Gujarat - Uttrayan
Assam- Bihu
Punjab- Lohri
Tamil -Pongal
UP & Bihar - Khichdi
In other countries too the day is celebrated by Hindus, but under different names and in different ways.
Nepal - Maghe Sankranti
Bangaladesh - Shakrain/ Poush Sangkranti
Pakistan - Tirmoori

Why it called makar Sakranti?

Sankranti' signifies the movement of the sun from one zodiac sign to another.
Celebrations in different Indian regions
Gujarat and Maharashtra, Makar Sankranti is a festival of the young and the old. Colourful kites are flown all around.
In Punjab, Makar Sankranti is called Lohri. December and January are the coldest months of the year in Punjab and huge bonfires are lit on the eve of Sankranti. Sweets, sugarcane and rice are thrown on the bonfires and friends and relatives gather together.
In Uttar Pradesh, this period is celebrated as Kicheri. It is considered important to have a bath on this day and masses of people can be seen bathing in the Sangam at Prayagraj where the rivers Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswathi flow together.

Why do we fly kites?
Makar Sankranti is quite a beneficiary to health in multiple ways. The tradition of kite flying is for a healthy exposure in the early morning Sun. These initial rays are healthy and a good source of Vitamin D. It is also considered to be good for skin and helps in fighting many infections and sickness caused by the chilly winter winds.

Why do we eat tilguds?
It is winter time and skin will go dry. During Sankranti, people in Karnataka prepare a mixture of ground nut, dry coconut, til, jaggery, and fried gram (Ellu). This is distributed among relatives and consumed. This mixture helps body to fight cold and also the recuperate the oil lost from the body due to winter. Keep Body warm

Social Reason
Sankranti is a festival to celebrate harvest. The food grains grown are worshiped and a portion is distributed among relatives and needy. It is mainly meant to worship and respect nature. People take holy dips, worship rivers and other water bodies, fly kites and so on. This is the social reason.
