Siddhartha Gautama, who would later become known as the Buddha, was born around the 5th century BCE in Lumbini, which is now in modern-day Nepal
Born into a royal family, Siddhartha lived a sheltered life of luxury. However, he became deeply troubled by the suffering he saw outside the palace walls. Determined to find a solution to human suffering, he left his home and family to become a wandering ascetic
After years of rigorous ascetic practices and meditation, Siddhartha realized that neither extreme luxury nor extreme asceticism led to enlightenment. He then decided to follow a middle path. This led him to Bodh Gaya, a village in the present-day Indian state of Bihar
In Bodh Gaya, Siddhartha sat under a large Bodhi Tree (Ficus religiosa), and vowed not to rise until he had found the truth. After meditating for 49 days, he attained enlightenment, and became the Buddha; meaning "The Awakened One." This profound spiritual realization occurred under what is now known as the Bodhi Tree making Bodh Gaya the most important pilgrimage site for Buddhists worldwide
The spot where Buddha attained enlightenment is now marked by the Mahabodhi Temple as a UNESCO World Heritage Site which attracts millions of pilgrims, and visitors from around the world every year
