Makary Pressed on Abortion Drug Mifepristone in FDA Confirmation Hearing

Martin Makary, President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the FDA, testified at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on March 6.

Both Democratic and Republican senators asked Makary whether, as commissioner, he would maintain access to the abortion pill mifepristone. He repeatedly said he would look at the data but wouldn’t make any commitments.

More than 60% of U.S. abortions were performed by medication in 2023, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research organization that supports abortion rights. The Supreme Court last year unanimously rejected a challenge of the FDA’s 2000 approval of mifepristone by anti-abortion activists.
