Mahakumbh: History and Significance | Swami Paramatmananda | #SangamTalks

The Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. It is held every 12 years at four rotating locations in India: Prayagraj (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. It is a major pilgrimage festival in Hinduism, attracting millions of devotees, saints, and spiritual seekers from around the globe.
Sacred Bathing (Shahi Snan): Devotees take a holy dip in the sacred rivers—Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati (confluence at Prayagraj), Godavari (Nashik), Shipra (Ujjain), and Ganga (Haridwar)—to cleanse sins and attain Moksha (liberation).
Astrological Significance: The timing of the Kumbh is determined by specific planetary alignments, particularly the positions of Jupiter, the Sun, and the Moon.
The event is linked to the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean of Milk) in Hindu mythology, where the gods and demons vied for the nectar of immortality (Amrit).
It is believed that a few drops of Amrit fell at these four locations during the churning, making them spiritually significant.
