Ingredients:
Chocolate Cake Layer:
1 small chocolate sponge cake (store-bought or homemade), crumbled
See NOTE at the end for the quick sponge.
Cherry Layer:
1 can (400g) cherry pie filling or pitted black cherries in syrup
2 tbsp kirsch (cherry brandy) or cherry juice (optional)
Chocolate Custard Layer:
500ml (2 cups) milk
3 tbsp cocoa powder
2 tbsp cornstarch
4 tbsp sugar
100g (3.5 oz) dark chocolate, chopped
1 tsp vanilla extract
Whipped Cream Layer:
400ml (1 2/3 cups) heavy cream
2 tbsp powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
Toppings:
Chocolate shavings or curls
Maraschino cherries or fresh cherries
Optional: crushed amaretti biscuits or chocolate sprinkles for extra texture
NOTE:
Ingredients:
All-purpose flour: 12 tbsp (~90g)
Cocoa powder (unsweetened): 6 tbsp (~45g)
Granulated sugar: 6 tbsp (~50g)
Baking powder: 1 tsp (~4g)
Salt: Pinch (~1g)
Milk: 6 tbsp (~90ml or 90g)
Vegetable oil or melted butter: 3 tbsp (~45ml or 40g)
Vanilla extract: 1 tsp (~5ml or 5g)
Optional: Chopped chocolate or chocolate chips: 3 tbsp (~30g)
