Why Farm Scorpions
Underneath these coconut husks lurks one of the most feared critters in the world—scorpions. These, in particular, are Asian forest scorpions. Found all across tropical Asia, these scorpions are bulky, with large claws and a tough appearance. But despite their intimidating look, they have rather mild toxicity, and no human deaths have ever been linked to them. Their size and meaty bodies make them a common ingredient in exotic dishes in Vietnam and Cambodia. Surprisingly, they’re also docile and popular as pets.
Other scorpions, however, are much more dangerous. What you’re seeing here is scorpion milking—extracting one of the most valuable liquids on Earth. The deathstalker’s venom can fetch up to $39 million per gallon! But the scorpion being milked here is likely the Chinese golden scorpion. Its venom is prized for treating paralysis and epilepsy, with just 10 milligrams of its dried venom costing around 300 dollars.
