Essential Non-Verbal Skills Video02. Good posture, breathe properly, look good.

Essential skill 1: Looking your best and having good posture.

And although it sounds very obvious – and perhaps sounds easy - it’s often neglected.

We’re not talking about having to look incredibly beautiful or whatever. And we’re not talking about having to pretend we’re something we’re not.

However, we are definitely talking about standing and sitting up straight and, at the same time looking as natural as we can. We’re talking about good posture.

Slouching simply isn’t a good look - nor is pushing our chest out, standing in an unusual or having our hands in our pockets for that matter.

In many ways, we’re talking about the way most of us would present ourselves at a job interview. At a minimum, we’d probably wear clean clothes and we make sure our nails were clean. Sounds so obvious doesn’t it? Yet, time and time again, we see people who don’t get it right.

And it’s about breathing naturally - like we do when we’re relaxed and not self-conscious. It’s about breathing in by letting the diaphragm (an arched structure at the base of our lungs and basically separates the chest from the abdomen) naturally contract. This action brings air into the lungs and pushes the abdomen out.

And after it has finished contracting, letting it naturally relax and help move air out of the lungs and help make the abdomen flatten.

If you’d like to know more about breathing naturally – often called diaphragmatic breathing – please consult your health specialist.
