Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle located in Oslo, Norway, built to defend the city and house royalty. Its construction dates back to the 1290s, and it has been mentioned in sources since 1300. The fortress has been used as a military base, a prison, and is currently home to several museums. It has never been successfully besieged by a foreign enemy, but it surrendered to the Germans in 1940 during World War II. The castle has a reputation for being haunted, with reports of ghostly apparitions, including a cloaked figure and a vicious dog, as well as the sounds of chains rattling and screams from those tortured within its walls. Visitors can tour the castle in the summer and perhaps witness some of its ghostly inhabitants.
