Makara Sankranti and Pongal were celebrated with great joy and devotion on 14 January 2025 by the Vedanta Sadhaka Course (VSC) students and CIF family. The day was filled with vibrant rituals, heartfelt offerings to the Sun God and festive cheer, marking the significance of the harvest season.
Makara Sankranti is an important festival in many parts of India, symbolising the Sun's journey towards the northern hemisphere. Pongal, celebrated predominantly in Tamil Nadu, is a harvest festival that expresses gratitude to the Sun, nature and the livestock that contribute to a bountiful harvest. Although these festivals are celebrated in different regions of India, they share the common theme of celebrating the harvest season and honouring the Sun God for the blessings of abundance.
Swami Nirbhayananda of Chinmaya Mission, Mumbai, lit the fire to cook the Pongal (a dish made of rice, lentils, pepper & cumin) in front of the Illom. Following the cooking, a Surya Narayana Puja dedicated to the Sun God was performed by Swami Sharadananda Sarasvati (Resident Acharya, VSC). It is believed that this puja blesses one with good health, prosperity, strength and success. The freshly made Pongal was offered to Bhagavan in a ceremony filled with reverence. After the puja, all participants shared the Prasadam, concluding the celebration in a spirit of joy and gratitude.
