The taste of food is a combination of taste, which is the taste through the tongue, and smell, which is the taste through the nose!
If you drink cola and cider with your eyes closed and your nose closed, the scent of cola and cider will be covered and it will be hard to tell because only each of them has a sweet taste.
Similar examples include apple juice and grape juice, which are said to be hard to tell if you drink it with your eyes covered and your nose covered, because it leaves only the sweet taste of the fruit with the same scent covered by apples and grapes
Onions and apples are similar in texture (crunchy~), which is the feel of the tongue, but they can be distinguished better because the spicy taste of onions causes pain in the tongue.
