The second trip to North America, planned for May 1929, was suspended. Two engines failed one after the other due to a broken crankshaft. Eckener decided to turn back. On the way back through the Valley of Rhone, two more engines failed with the same damage. Taking into account the circumstances, the French government authorized an emergency landing at the naval base Couers, near Toulon. Spare engines were delivered from Friedrichshafen and the airship returned to Germany. By the way, this accident slightly softened the attitude of the French government towards Germany and its airships.
