The Pacific Northwest is perched right over the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a massive fault line that stretches more than 600 miles from northern California all the way up to British Columbia. Here, the Juan de Fuca and North American tectonic plates are constantly pushing against each other, creating a lot of geological tension. This isn’t a region that experiences frequent earthquakes; rather, it’s a high-risk area where locked plates build up pressure over centuries, setting the stage for a potentially devastating quake.
