Haridwar, located in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, is one of the most ancient and revered cities in India. Known as the "Gateway to the Gods," Haridwar is a prominent pilgrimage site for Hindus and holds immense spiritual significance.
Haridwar is mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures and has been a major pilgrimage site for centuries. It is one of the seven holiest places (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism. According to legend, Haridwar is one of the four places where drops of Amrit (the elixir of immortality) accidentally spilled over from a pitcher carried by the celestial bird Garuda during the churning of the ocean. This mythological event is commemorated by the Kumbh Mela, a massive pilgrimage held every twelve years, attracting millions of devotees.
Haridwar is situated at the foothills of the Shivalik ranges in the Himalayas and lies on the banks of the holy River Ganges. The city is located about 220 kilometers northeast of Delhi, making it easily accessible from the national capital and other major cities.
Kumbh Mela: Held every twelve years, this is the largest religious gathering in the world, with millions of pilgrims participating in rituals and taking a holy dip in the Ganges.
Ardh Kumbh Mela: Held every six years, it is a smaller version of the Kumbh Mela.
Kanwar Mela: During the monsoon month of Shravan, thousands of devotees, known as Kanwariyas, collect holy water from the Ganges and carry it to Shiva temples across India.
Haridwar's entire ambiance is imbued with spirituality. The city is dotted with numerous ashrams where spiritual teachings, yoga, and meditation are practiced. The serene environment, combined with the constant chanting of prayers and hymns, creates a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere.
