Jackie and Shadow must have decided they were away from the nest just a little too long for their beloved fans, so they returned yesterday to check in and also to enjoy a little evening rendezvous together.
Earlier in the day, a trio of band-tailed pigeons bravely perched on one of Jackie and Shadow’s favorite branches on the Lookout Snag tree. They stayed a while but then Shadow must have seen them and wasn't having it, so they high-tailed it out as soon as they saw him coming!
Just before dark, Shadow arrived at the nest and began moving the large pine cone decor around. Jackie flew by and she joined Shadow in the nest a few minutes later. They must have just had a huge fish feast for dinner as they both had bulging crops!
They worked at adjusting some of the larger outer guardrail sticks and Shadow continued to peck at the pine cone. Both had watchful eyes and careful observation as they looked out over their beautiful habitat. Their visit lasted less than ten minutes before both headed to the Roost Tree, but it was long enough to put a smile on the faces of all of their devoted fans!
They may have been busy this past week carefully patrolling the area and a bit distracted as there have been several young visitors, including two juveniles plus a sub-adult bald eagle and a juvenile hawk who have been out and about around the lake. One of the young juvenile bald eagles was even bold enough to spend the night on a branch underneath Jackie and Shadow in the Roost tree!
They are likely making their presence known to these visitors, that their established nesting territory will be off limits to any intruders once any eggs are laid. Jackie and Shadow have not been seen or heard mating yet this season, however, the first observed mating on the cams last season was on Dec 31, so we will continue to be patient and let nature dictate.
