Step 2 of Mark's 3-step process for Stopping Bad Behaviour & Dealing with Difficult People

This video is part of a series in which Mark explains how to use his three-step process to stop bad behaviour and deal wth difficult people.

This video gives an overview of the second step - Tailor the strategies.

The three steps are:

Step 1. Nail the violation.

We need to be clear about what the person has said or done that we find unacceptable, unsatisfactory or inappropriate. For example, it's not that we think they're a narcissist, a bully or whatever (although they may well be). It's that they, for example:

-Shouted at you in front of other staff';
-Punished you for breaking a rule even though they break it themselves;
-Demanded you do something for them even though you'd told them twice you were not allowed to do it;
-Insinuated you were incompetent;
-Said you were a stupid F*&**^%; etc

Step 2. Tailor the strategies.

mark has a list of tried and tested strategies and the second step is to pick those that fit the violation and tailor them accordingly.

Step 3. Personalise your approach.

We all have slightly different needs, goals, relationships to the 'difficult person', responsibilities, parameters, policies and procedures to follow, authority and power, feelings about the possible ramifications of using different strategies, and ways of speaking and doing things. etc. Therefore, we need to personalise the strategies we chose to meet our particular situation.
