It also involves the ability to create and nurture close friendships, as well as feeling comfortable interacting with many different individuals and groups. Humans are social creatures by nature. Social wellness is important because it allows us to share our skills and resources, making it easier to survive. Having positive connections with others also improves our self-esteem, communication skills, and emotional resilience. To apply this to your life, think about the groups you belong to, such as your neighborhood or any organizations you’re a part of. A social group could be made up of friends, family members, or coworkers who share common goals, such as planning a trip, cooking a meal, or working on a team project. Social wellness is enhanced by the mutual feeling of community, support, and recognition of many people working together for a common goal. In the workplace, social wellness is important because it makes it easier to have functional teams that work towards the same goals. Consider this scenario. Fatima is a project manager for an insurance organization. While she occasionally struggles with completing tasks on time, she regularly communicates her progress with her manager and asks for help when needed. Fatima participates in the company culture and has several friends in the office who she can turn to for support in times of stress. Despite her busy schedule, Fatima often feels calm and optimistic. This is an example of positive social wellness. Asami is also a project manager for the same organization. She also sometimes struggles with meeting deadlines, but she tries to hide this instead of asking for help. She does not socialize much with her coworkers because she prioritizes work. Asami often feels overwhelmed and isolated in her role. This is an example of poor social wellness. Whether you relate more to Fatima or Asami, there are always ways to improve your social wellness if you choose to. To start, you can reflect on your circumstances and your current social needs. What is working for you? What would you like to modify or improve? Once you understand how you’d like to change, you can create a plan and take small steps toward your goal. For instance, if you’d like to make more friends at work, try speaking to someone who you don’t usually interact with. The next day, you might start a casual conversation with someone else. These efforts add up. If you’re intentional, you can enhance your social wellness slowly yet steadily.
