On July 30, 2000, the legendary Kannada actor Dr. Rajkumar was abducted from his farmhouse in Gajanur, Tamil Nadu, by the infamous forest brigand Veerappan. This shocking kidnapping became one of the most talked-about events in Indian history, sparking protests, chaos, and negotiations that lasted for 108 days.
Dr. Rajkumar, accompanied by his family, had stopped at his farmhouse after visiting the Lord Venkateshwara Temple in Tirumala. Minutes after dinner, Veerappan and his gang of 9 armed men stormed the house. Though the situation was terrifying, Veerappan promised no harm would come to the Kannada matinee idol. Dr. Rajkumar, his son-in-law A.S. Govindraj, a relative Nagesh, and assistant director Nagappa were taken hostage.
As news of the abduction spread, violence erupted in Karnataka. Bengaluru witnessed widespread protests, attacks on Tamil newspaper offices, and a statewide shutdown of the Kannada film industry. The governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu worked together to resolve the crisis, with Tamil Nadu appointing journalist R.R. Gopal as the official emissary to negotiate with Veerappan.
Veerappan, who was already infamous for smuggling sandalwood and prior kidnappings, demanded favors from the government. Despite the tense situation, Dr. Rajkumar later revealed that he was treated respectfully throughout his captivity. After months of intense negotiations, the Kannada superstar was finally released on November 15, 2000.
