The GoPro Hero 8 is a great camera for many people... but here's why it wasn't right for me.
First, both Hero 8s I received froze... a lot. I used the recommended SD cards and the most up-to-date-firmware. We're now in the 8th iteration of GoPro's action camera, why is this still happening?
I wasn't worried about the the non-replacable lens, but it ended up being a big issue. GoPro promised that the glass on the new lens is "twice as strong". A little stack into a bush and my lens was toast... necessitating an entirely new camera. Good thing I bought it at Costco eh? Yes, I could buy a protector, but that's $25 extra on a camera that SHOULD still have a replacable lens.
The external mic, despite being right by my mouth on the chin bar of my helmets, didn't pick up my voice enough to make a decent motovlog. GoPro fixes this by availing the "Media Mod", an $80 accessory that adds a 3.5mm jack for an external mic, but also weight and bulk to their camera.
If you want excellent footage straight from the camera, the Hero 8 delivers when color is turned to "GoPro" and sharpness is turned to high. However, the footage can be manipulated and look even better in post when these settings are set to "low" or off entirely. When these settings are turned off, the footage at 1080p 60fps (the only mode with acceptable battery life for my usage) is comparable to the Sony X3000... a camera that came out four years ago. Since I nearly always edit my footage, the X3000 just makes more sense... even though it's 4 years old! It has more organic stabilization with its Balanced Optical Steady Shot, which means it has OPTICAL (not just digital) image stabilization.
The Sony doesn't freeze, it's image quality is still on par with the best, it has excellent battery life, and the mic jack on board make it an amazing value. I look forward to trying GoPro's next iteration to see if they fix these flaws, but seeing as how I'd still rather use my Sony X3000, I'm way more excited to see Sony's next action cam.
