Why Was Nalanda University Destroyed?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a new campus at Nalanda University near the ancient ruins of Rajgir, Bihar. This new campus is named after the famous Nalanda University which thrived over 1,600 years ago. Nalanda University was established by Gupta Kumargupta 1, the ruler of the Gupta Empire in 427 CE. It was a prestigious university where students from countries including Japan, Korea, Turkey, Tibet, etc. came to gain knowledge. According to historians, In 1202 AD Bakhtiyar Khilji Turkic invaders destroyed and ransacked the Nalanda University. One day he fell ill and his court doctors couldn't cure him. So, unwillingly he had to take treatment from Ayurveda scholar Acharya Rahul Sribhadra from the Nalanda University and he managed to heal him. After that, he couldn't accept that Indian scholars knew more than his own doctors, so he decided to destroy all sources of knowledge. He set the University library on fire and let it burn for over three months destroying more than 9 million books and manuscripts.
