Karthikai Deepam is a Hindu festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Karthikai
(November–December) to honor Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva.
The festival marks his birth and victory over the demon Surapadman. Devotees light oil lamps (deepams) in their homes and temples, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness.
The highlight is the grand lighting of the sacred flame atop the Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, which can be seen from afar. The festival is a time for prayers, family gatherings, and feasting on special sweets like Karthikai appam.
