The streets of Kalgoorlie were once literally paved with gold. A century ago, residents plucked nuggets of the precious metal from the pavement - but little of that wealth has flowed to the traditional custodians. If the proposed closure of WA's remote communities goes ahead - the already struggling regional centre will be on the front line of the social displacement that will follow.
