NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams departed the International Space Station on March 18, 2025, aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule for a long-awaited return to Earth. Their journey began after a nine-month delay caused by issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, which was initially supposed to bring them home after an eight-day test mission. The two astronauts, along with two others, undocked from the ISS at 1:05 a.m. ET and embarked on a 17-hour trip back to Earth. Before leaving, they were seen celebrating with colleagues onboard, engaging in final tests and preparations in their re-entry suits. Wilmore and Williams will have spent 286 days in space, longer than the typical six-month ISS mission. Their return marks the conclusion of their involvement in NASA’s Crew-9 astronaut rotation mission, with a splashdown scheduled off the coast of Florida.
