Ship Stability Video 96: Damage Stability- Intermediate Compartment Bilging
In my opinion, the Master of a ship must take personal interest in understanding various ifs and buts of damage stability calculations. The entire crew looks up to Master for an able guidance in the bilging situations. The most important contribution of the constant displacement method in a bilging calculation is to find an accurate sinkage. A mariner must also understand that a ship may be constructed in different ways and damage could occur in different areas. The effect of the variations on residual stability must be understood. Capt. S.S. Chaudhari, in this video explains trimming of a vessel in ‘intermediate compartment-damage’ condition, though, an approx trim change can also be found quickly by added weight method.
